Joseph Tong Atlas Arcanum (Song to the Siren), 2024

Exhibition at the St. Regis Hotel Venice

Joseph Tong is an international artist born in Hongkong currently living and working between Berlin, London and Hong Kong. He was selected to participate in several group exhibitions around the world, such as Art Basel Hong Kong (2024). Among this, he also did a number of solo shows between Hong Kong, Mumbai, Zurich, Munich and Berlin.

His artistic practices explore the intersections of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions by creating visual narratives in which to debate, dissect and evaluate how these belief systems interact in a contemporary ideological contexts. His work also delves into the overlaps between theological principles and mythological beliefs, examining their contrasts and binaries.

As a visual linguist, Tong rejects the idea of a singular artistic style. He challenges the notion of the passive viewer, questioning medium and materiality through a multidisciplinary and experimental approach that includes oil and ink painting, photography, sculpture, and sitespecific installations.

The materials he uses, such as structured plexiglas, aluminum, brass, dichroic film, wool, and calligraphy paper, are as important as the concepts behind his work, creating new interpretations through a blend of highly aestheticized components.

Tong’s work features a dynamic visual language that sometimes combines digital techniques with analog craftsmanship. He explores optical perception and hypothetical reality through experiential representation, while investigating the potential of digital image manipulation in cross-media applications and the creation of new materialities.

In his work „Atlas Arcanum“ (Song to the Siren), the artist revisit the mystery of caves, intertwining philosophical narratives inspired by Chinese ’shan shui‘ ink paintings. This new body of works reveals the intricate relationship between underground world and the human soul.

Using monochromatic strokes in oil and wax pastels, the artworks captures the interplay between shadows and light within this underground sancturies, evoking ancient Chinese landscapes. Te user is invited to contemplatet and immerse. Each piece carries allegorical significance, symbolizing the uncharted territories of the human mind. The cave represents physical obscurity and the hidden aspects of conciousness, playing a homage to Plato’s „Allegory of the Cave“ and Taoist ideas of truth. The viewer is invited to contemplate the interplay of light and darkness, reflecting the ‚wuwei‘ Taoist’s principle of effortless action. He is able to initiate a dialogue between the inner self and the vast expanse of the universe.

The fuson of ’shan shui‘ aesthetic with philosphical themes in Atlas Arcanum forms a harmonious blend that highlights the connection between nature, spirituality and the human psyche.
